The national project ‘I want to be an engineer’ opens in the Region of Murcia with the assistance of 1,500 students from 32 secondary schools. The Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) is one of the six Spanish academic centers selected to develop this project of the Ministry of the Presidency, Relations with the Courts and Equality, which has the support of the Community.

The Minister of Education, Youth and Sports, Adela Martínez-Cachá, opened today along with the rector of the UPCT, Alejandro Díaz, and the Secretary of State for Equality, Soledad Murillo, this initiative at the Víctor Villegas Auditorium in Murcia.

The head of Education stressed that «although women are majority in universities, their percentage drops to 25 percent when it comes to engineering studies, both in Spain and in Europe, but it is known that these studies lead to the professions with a better labor insertion, and that many girls are good at ESO and Baccalaureate related to engineering, why then young women do not choose engineering? With this type of initiatives we intend to reverse this trend and promote scientific-technical vocations among them «.

The event was attended by 1,500 students, although 3,200 applications were received to attend, to which the counselor showed their support and appreciation «for being part of projects that like this seek to provide more opportunities for women.»

Martínez-Cachá explained that since last October a team of engineers and architects have visited a total of 74 Secondary Education centers to explain to the students the merits of their profession and the need for more and more girls to increase their proficiency. percentage of technical careers.

«We need more women practicing these disciplines, and that is why this program is so important, because it will motivate many of you to follow a path that appeals to you, but that may seem too arduous and difficult,» said the head of Education, who She stated that «this is not the case, nothing is too difficult or difficult for a woman who proposes it to her».

During the day the assistants could realize all type of practices related to the matter in the technological fair, thanks to the participation of different technological companies of the Region like Navantia, Sabic or Repsol. Likewise, they were able to meet the Ministry’s educational programs such as ‘El cable amarillo’, the Vocational Training offer and other initiatives to promote scientific-technical studies such as ‘Talliot’ and ‘Talent STEM’.
