Hundreds of people yesterday challenged the cold and gave themselves to San Sebastián, the patron saint of Ricote, who starred in the traditional procession on the big day of the local fiestas. Although during the day there was a risk of rain throughout the Ricote Valley, the image of the patron shined during his tour of the main streets of the municipality.
The cortege departed from the Church accompanied by civil and ecclesiastical authorities. Upon reaching the Gran Vía, the traditional fireworks castle was launched. The public took to the streets despite the intense cold that reigned throughout the night.
The festivities of Ricote will continue until next Sunday. This Tuesday, San Sebastian will once again take to the streets and on Saturday it will be the traditional float parade through the municipality.
Celedonio Moreno: «Visiting our town is a real luxury for the senses»
The name of San Sebastián returns to sound with force, like every January, in Ricote, a municipality that is already immersed in its patron saint festivities. Celedonio Moreno, mayor of the town, faces these celebrations «with great enthusiasm and responsibility»
More than a thousand years of history contemplate Ricote, a town that, like every January, enjoys its patron saint festivities in honor of San Sebastian. Some celebrations that the mayor of the municipality, Celedonio Moreno, faces «with great enthusiasm».
One more year, Ricote delves into his desired patron saint. What expectations do you face these days in the municipality?
As in recent years, since I am mayor of Ricote, these days I face them with great enthusiasm and with a lot of responsibility, with the idea that everything comes out as we have foreseen and, of course, that time is with us, so that these We can enjoy the holidays to the fullest. Despite the cold, to which we are already accustomed, if it rains or is very windy the holidays are discouraged, but we trust that our patron San Sebastian will help us in this section and we can spend a few days of the most cordial, in the company of friends and family
We enter into celebrations that revolve around the figure of San Sebastian. To what extent is the figure of your employer venerated in the locality?
San Sebastián has been a patron since the beginning of the 16th century. After San Pedro and Santiago has been the patron of Ricote since the Moorish period, and the image that can be seen in the parish church is the original. San Sebastián has always been the reference for ricoteños and ricoteñas, and in Ricote this saint is everything. A person from Ricote may lack everything, except the reference to his saint. If there is something that characterizes ricoteños and ricoteñas, wherever they are, it is the love of their patron and the longing not to be in Ricote during the days of the patron saint’s festivities.
The festivities of Ricote come accompanied by a program of activities carefully prepared for the occasion. Which are the ones that I would highlight the most and why?
Above all, the events in which there is more neighborhood participation, such as the popular food with the traditional gachasmigas, which this year will be held on the 21st, and the parades of floats with the peñas and groups of friends, which this year will take out on the 26th. I also want to highlight the events we will hold in the municipal auditorium, such as the concert of Antonio Hidalgo and the Happys on the 19th, a variety and humor show for all audiences on the 20th and a magnificent work by theater on the 21st. This year we have the company of Julián Romea with Carlos Arniches’ humorous work ‘Que viene viene mi marido’. I do not want to forget the day of January 12, when we kicked off with the proclamation of parties, which this year came from the hand of our beloved neighbor Ambrosio Moreno Abenza, ricoteño settled in Madrid for many years, but has not lost the links with our people; and the coronation of our party queens. This year we have four young people who magnificently represent the beauty of Ricoteña women and two children who will accompany the court of honor, all enlivened with Ana Belén Comenge, with her tribute to Rocío Dúrcal. Special mention should be made of the processions through the streets of Ricote of the image of our patron saint San Sebastián on the 20th and 22nd of January.
People who visit the municipality during these days will also have the opportunity to discover endless treasures. What are the great attractions that are available to tourists?
Ricote is a monumental place. It is a town with over a thousand years of documented history. Before the ninth century we have prehistoric remains, specifically cave paintings, but our most important past begins with the Muslim conquest. The castle is from the ninth century, our garden began to be cultivated in the 10th century; during the thirteenth century, Ricote was the birthplace of scholars such as Ibn Sabin or al-Riquti; from 1285, territory of the order of Santiago; and all this has left us a very interesting historical street map to visit, architectural monuments, two of them BIC, such as the church and the palace of Llamas (which can be visited); good part of the palace of the encomienda or covers of noble buildings like the house of Hoyos.
What other reasons would you give to encourage people to visit Ricote taking advantage of being immersed in their patron celebrations?
In addition to the extensive program we have planned, visiting Ricote is always a luxury for the senses, for its wonderful landscapes and, above all, for the hospitality of the ricoteños. We like to make part of our parties to all who visit us. Whoever visits us these days will be able to enjoy one of the most traditional festivals of the Region of Murcia for the time of the year in which they take place.
