The regional chief executive, Fernando Lopez Miras, said today that the Community, in collaboration with the regional tourism sector, is going to promote the Murcia Region International Airport in the main tourist fairs of the world, such as those that take place in London , Berlin or Moscow, as well as at the International Tourism Fair of Madrid, Fitur 2019, which takes place this week.

López Miras, who met today at the Palacio de San Esteban with the president of the Association of Hotels and Tourist Accommodation of the Costa Cálida (Hostetur), Soledad Díaz, moved the importance that this infrastructure will have for the regional tourism sector, since according to a study of the College of Economists and the Polytechnic University of Cartagena, in the next 15 years will report 900 million for the regional economy and 19,000 new jobs.

According to the Minister of Tourism and Culture, Miriam Guardiola, at the end of the meeting, the Community will promote connectivity between the new airport and the United Kingdom and Ireland. The Region and its tourist offer will be promoted in Spanish destinations, such as Asturias and Barcelona, ​​as well as in European cities where it works with airlines on new routes, specifically to Copenhagen, Rome, Dusseldorf and Paris.

The promotion of the International Airport of the Region of Murcia will be one of the strategic lines that will be taken to the International Tourism Fair, Fitur 2019, which takes place this week in Madrid, where the President of the Community will hold various work meetings.

During the meeting, the president reiterated that tourism is a «strategic sector» for the regional economy, which has created 20 new jobs every day in the last year and that has led to 65 consecutive months creating jobs. A sector that already accounts for 11.4 percent of regional GDP. In 2018, 5.7 million tourists arrived in the Region and the goal in 2019 is to reach 6 million.

In addition, in terms of tourism promotion this year has been recorded in the Community Budgets a game of more than 6.5 million to promote the region as a tourist destination. Also, in the meeting addressed the measures of the Tourism Institute to break seasonality, as well as the situation of the Mar Menor, to which recovery this year will be earmarked 22 million euros by the Community.

The regional chief executive and the president of Hostetur also addressed some of the measures put in place by the regional government to mitigate the Brexit effect, and the minister announced that next week there will be a meeting with the tourism sector to address this issue.
