REGION DE MURCIA / Three SABIC engineers share their experience to promote technical female vocations among students

Three SABIC engineers have narrated their work experience in the multinational to help promote female vocations in the field of Engineering, within the initiative ‘I want to be an Engineer’.

SABIC has actively opted for this initiative to promote scientific and technological vocations among girls in Compulsory Secondary Education (ESO) as part of their Social Responsibility activities that focus on 3 areas of action: environmental protection, health and well-being and education in technology and science.

The Auditorium and Congress Center of Murcia hosted a massive gala yesterday, which was attended by 1,500 Secondary students from various educational centers in the region and women who are a reference in different branches of Engineering. In addition, there were musical performances, inspirational videos, a photocall area and several information booths, including one from SABIC.

Maite Sánchez Lorca, María de Góngora Giménez and Ana Alonso Fenollar, three young engineers from different branches working at SABIC encouraged the students to pursue their dreams by sharing their experiences and launching motivational messages during a conference held during the Gala ‘I want to be an Engineer. They are a model for today’s young women to visualize that women can achieve what they set out to, that technical careers have many professional opportunities and that they make very interesting and useful things for society.

At present, there is a broad consensus that the most demanded profiles are and will be the technicians or those that come from what is known as STEM careers (acronym in English that refers to the areas of knowledge in which scientists usually work). engineers, science, technology, engineering and mathematics).

Thus, Maite Sánchez Lorca, engineer in Industrial Organization and Industrial Mechanical Engineering in Mechanics, defended that «everything is possible» and that «with effort and perseverance» you can «combine studies, professional and family life».

Sánchez, who has been with SABIC for eleven years, is the company’s Maintenance Planning and Programming Coordinator, was the first woman Maintenance Coordinator of the Cartagena complex.

On the other hand, María de Góngora Giménez stressed that «the most important thing is to dedicate yourself to something that you are passionate about and that makes you enjoy», pointing out that knowing how to work in a team is fundamental. This Chemical Engineer is a specialist in Continuous Improvement in SABIC and has been with the company for more than six years.

«Go abroad and enjoy other cultures» and «do not assume you already know everything and get ready» are some of the recommendations that Ana Alonso Fenollar gave to the young people attending the gala, who listened attentively to the advice of these three SABIC professionals.

Alonso is a Senior Chemical Engineer and studies Environmental Engineering and Sustainable Processes. She has six years of experience in the industrial complex of La Aljorra and is an operations engineer at the Compounding plant.

The national project ‘I want to be an engineer’ is promoted and financed by the Institute for Women and Equal Opportunities, of the Secretary of State for Equality, and promoted by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports of the Region of Murcia and the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT).

In this its first edition the Ministry of the Presidency, Relations with the Courts and Equality has selected the universities of Granada, Burgos, and Alicante, as well as the polytechnics of Madrid and Cartagena.
