Thirty comparsas, with 1,500 participants, show the best of the Cabezo de Torres Carnival. One of the most applauded groups was Stallions Atascaos, which ironized with the contamination of the Mar Menor
«You can hear the firecrackers!» Commented one of the members of the group Sementales Atascaos at the Mesón de Blas, while his companions hurried the coffee and proceeded to pay the bill. With the green contact lenses and the painted face of the same color, the expression of the boys who are part of this carnival group conveyed the joy of the festivities. After 3 pm, the clouds that threatened to rain in the morning began to dissipate.
Almost an hour later they began to parade the thirty comparsas, made up of 1,500 people, who this year participated in the Cabezo de Torres Carnival, a district attended by some 10,000 people last Sunday to enjoy the first great parade of the festivities , says the pedáneo. «Carnival is celebrated not only by those who live here, but also by many outsiders,» said Javi, one of the waiters at the Mesón de Blas, who said that «these days we did not stop, the bars we decided to open are full of people».
Between songs of pop, reggaeton and even Mexican, the troupe of Stallions Atascaos decided to add to his show a fragment that lacked music and gave way to a kind of discourse. «Stop destroying the Mar Menor, my most precious salt lake, or you will pay with the fury of my trident.» This was part of the message that the audience listened to during the brief musical parenthesis. In the elaborate suits of this group could be distinguished cans stuck to plastic meshes that simulated scales; conchshells, starfish and fish caught in plastic collars. «We denounce the pollution of the seas and, specifically, the one that occurs in the Mar Menor», confirmed Tano, one of the components of the comparsa. «That’s why we’ve dressed as Poseidon.» The veteran carnival, Pepito El Molinero, did not miss his appointment either.
Other groups opted for more simple costumes, such as the La Polla troupe. While they danced in a conga shape, their members – who were all men – wore a red tutu, earrings, shirts and matching necklaces. «We even wear red underpants,» commented one of the members, who was known in the district as «Paco, the one driving the car». This neighbor assured, in addition, that he has been behind him for 37 years participating in the great day of Carnival.
At the head of the parade, the first troupe that was responsible for encouraging the audience was Los Criticones. The costumes of this group were fully inspired by the videoclip of ‘El anillo’, a song by Jennifer López that the girls of the troupe did not stop dancing. A theme that, likewise, did not stop ringing. The members of Los Criticones wore, among other accessories, false pigtails that exceeded one meter in length.
Mexican culture
The audience that attended this festival of Regional Tourist Interest also heard Mexican music, such as ‘El mundo es mi familia’. Entonered by the artist Marco Antonio Solís, it is one of the themes that make up the soundtrack of the Disney film ‘Coco’. With colored skirts and a ‘maillot’ in which a skeleton painted white was appreciated, the members of another comparsa opted for the costume of catrinas, one of the symbols of Mexican culture.
On this occasion, the muses of the Carnival dazzled with brilliant silver suits in which sequins abounded. In his carriage, there was no lack of peacock feathers and brightness. This year, the musos are Celia Sabater Alcántara, 22 years old, born in Cabezo de Torres and the comparsa Me sacas de quicio, and Pablo Meroño García, 21 years old and from San Javier, member of the Sementales Atascaos group.
Among the thousands of fans of this party who attended the Carnival were the mayor, José Ballesta, and the general director of Youth, Fran Sánchez, who also serves as president of the Cabezo de Torres Carnival Association. On the rostrum, from where he witnessed the parade, he commented that «this is the big day of Carnival, where everyone opens a costume and the carnival shows the best costumes and dances. There is no more satire and they have opted for more luxury and fantasy ».
