These figures mark a record in the mail parcel activity in the Region of Murcia, which has required the greatest logistical reinforcement in recent years

Correos distributed more than 2,650,000 packages in the Region of Murcia in 2018. At a national level, this figure rose to more than 106 million packages, which represented a national increase of 61% compared to the total of packages managed in 2017, percentage that in the Region of Murcia stood at 80.6%. For its part, Correos Express, the Group’s urgent parcel subsidiary, has handled around 59 million shipments, 16.3% more than in the previous year.

These figures represent a record in the parcel activity of the Correos Group, particularly during the last quarter of the year, which has required the greatest logistical reinforcement in recent years.

Specifically, during the month of November CORREOS distributed in the Region of Murcia about 260,000 packages and, in December, that figure rose to almost 329,000, representing an accumulated of 589,000 shipments and a percentage increase that is close to 36% compared to the same period of 2017.

In addition to the highest figures in absolute terms recorded in the last two months of 2018, another data that indicates the growth of the parcel segment is that CORREOS has managed a monthly average of around 9 million packages nationwide. In the Region of Murcia that figure has been placed in the vicinity of 221,000 packages, again, another record.

Regarding the origin and destination of the shipments handled by CORREOS, 78.3% are domestic shipments; 20,12%, import shipments coming mostly from China, Japan, Europe and the United States- and 1.54% export shipments, aimed at Europe and the Asian market.

These data are a direct consequence of the exponential growth that online commerce is registering in Spain, with increases of more than 20% per year in the last three years, according to the data of the Household Panel prepared by the National Commission of Markets and Competition (CNMC). ).

According to the same study, nine out of ten online buyers received a package associated with these purchases and the Correos Group remains the main logistics operator in the distribution of these shipments: 49% of the individuals received the e-commerce packages through of CORREOS and Correos Express.

CORREOS has made available to sellers and buyers all their logistical and human resources to offer the parcel service with the highest quality and deliver all shipments within the agreed deadlines, in an effort for which the postal and parcel company has prepared with investments in equipment, transportation and reinforcements.

Investments in equipment, technology and personnel reinforcements

CORREOS has made investments in infrastructures and technology to be able to meet this sustained increase in packages throughout the year and, especially, at the peak of activity. In recent years, it has invested 20 million euros in equipping the 18 large logistics centers with which it has all of Spain parcel classification machines capable of automatically treating up to 6,000 packages per hour.

With the new machines installed in Valencia, Oviedo, Barcelona and Madrid during 2018, CORREOS already has 20 package classification lines installed throughout Spain and has increased its classification capacity by 200,000 more packages per day.

It has also been equipped with new logistics equipment and has reinforced its transport networks with the opening of more than 100 new routes during the Christmas campaign that represent an increase of 17,000 km / day on the distance covered daily by local and provincial transport networks usual.

On the other hand, CORREOS has continued investing in new technologies and in the improvement of information systems to face the points of activity. In 2018, the «TAURO» application was implemented to optimize the distribution tasks as well as a balanced scorecard that allows us to know the estimated packages that will arrive at each unit and plan the necessary resources.

There has also been progress in the integration with the information systems of the big sellers of online commerce, which allows CORREOS to offer the total traceability of the shipments and provide the final recipient with timely information on the status of their orders.
