BULLAS / Great success in the guided tours to Los Cantos

This past Saturday dozens of people were able to see in the Roman site of Los Cantos the works that are being carried out by the students and volunteers of the second excavation campaign, in which they will work until August 26, thanks to the initiative proposed by the University of Murcia and the collaboration of the City of Bullas.

In the free Open Day, entitled «Open by excavation», the two groups, complete, went through the archaeological area that is located on the top of a small hill occupying an approximate area of 10,000 square meters.

In situ, the archaeologists and students themselves were in charge of presenting the findings and explaining the excavation and study techniques that are carried out in the site. Among the findings of this past week are the remains of a possible nymphaeum, where it is believed were discovered the source statues that are exhibited in the Wine Museum, as well as remains of mosaic pavements and signs of the different phases of occupation that the village had. Despite the short period of duration of the campaign, the works focus on three different areas, thanks to the high participation of students and volunteers enrolled this year. Specifically in the area of the possible ‘Hortus’ of the Villa (or garden area) and in the area of the ‘domus’ (main residence). The findings of this year allow us to affirm that we are facing a settlement of great complexity and extension, given the dispersion of the remains and the presence of the same in various phases of historical occupation.

The excavations continue throughout this week in combination with the specific subjects of the Course, performing in the mornings tasks of integral training in fundamental aspects such as excavation techniques, stratigraphy, photogrammetry, topography, field drawing, etc. the afternoons, the registry of the archaeological remains as well as the computer management.
