A 70% SURVIVAL IN CANCER IN 2030 WILL ONLY BE POSSIBLE WITH A NATIONAL RESEARCH STRATEGY

The Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC), through the AECC Scientific Foundation, the Spanish Association of Cancer Research (ASEICA) and the Banking Foundation «la Caixa», have come together to develop the first report on research and innovation in cancer in Spain where public and private data provided by, in addition to the three participating entities, the State Agency for Research; the Carlos III Health Institute; the Spanish Association of Biocompanies and 21 foundations with philanthropic activity. The study, presented in the framework of the World Day of Research in Cancer, analyzes the situation of the disease from a global perspective that takes into account the funding, research and treatment of the disease.

Among the most important data of the report is the reduction of public funds in R & D. After the economic crisis (between 2010 and 2016), spending on R & D in Spain fell by € 1,400m by 21%, an alarmingly low figure compared to neighboring countries. This means that, when science and innovation of public priorities are parked, research in Spain shows signs of stagnation and weakening.

In terms of cancer research, the situation is somewhat different. The growing volume of funding from philanthropy and European programs for quality research projects is a boost to Spanish cancer research. Faced with the stagnation of public investment between 2010 and 2016, the funds allocated by philanthropy to oncology research have increased by 178% and funds from European funds by 46%. In total, since 2007 Spain has allocated to investigate cancer, taking into account all sources of funding, € 1,555M, with 2017 being the most funds with € 140,306,089. In spite of everything, due to this stagnation in public investment, Spain will not be able to face the cancer challenge neither locally nor globally
